Ingredients

  • 6 slices sandwich bread (white, wheat, or sourdough)
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 8 thin slices deli turkey breast
  • 6 slices deli turkey ham
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 4 leaves romaine or butter lettuce
  • 1 large tomato sliced
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 long toothpicks or frilled skewers

Equipment

  • 1 Toaster or toaster oven (for toasting 6 slices of bread)
  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 Sharp serrated knife (for cutting sandwich into 4 triangles)
  • 1 Butter knife or small spatula (for spreading)
  • 1 Small mixing bowl (for mayo-mustard spread)
  • 4 long toothpicks or frilled skewers (to secure each triangle)

Method

  1. Toast all 6 slices of bread until golden brown. Let cool 2-3 minutes.
  2. Mix mayonnaise and Dijon mustard in a small bowl. Spread on one side of each toasted slice.
  3. On one slice, layer 2 lettuce leaves, 2-3 tomato slices, salt, pepper, and 4 slices of turkey.
  4. Spread mayo on both sides of a second slice; place on top.
  5. Layer cheddar cheese and 6 slices of turkey ham on the center slice.
  6. Spread mayo on the last slice; place on top, spread-side down.
  7. Cut into 4 triangles and secure each with a toothpick.

Notes

Notes: For a soggier-resistant make-ahead version, mayo-toast the bread instead of dry-toasting, and keep tomato separate until serving.
