Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp meringue powder
  • 9-10 tbsp warm water
  • 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract
  • Gel food coloring: red, blue, black, white

Equipment

  • 1 Round or superhero-shaped cookie cutter
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 2 Baking sheets
  • 1 Wire cooling rack
  • 3-4 Piping bags with small round tips
  • Toothpicks few

Method

  1. Cream the butter and sugar until fluffy, beat in the egg and vanilla, then mix in the flour, baking powder, and salt until just combined.
  2. Divide the dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap, and chill at least 1 hour.
  3. Roll to 1/4 inch thick, cut into rounds, and bake at 350°F for 9-11 minutes until edges are just golden.
  4. Cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
  5. Outline and flood the top two-thirds in red and the bottom third in blue with stiff icing, then fill with medium-consistency icing. Let crust 3-4 hours.
  6. Pipe a black web pattern over the red section, or drag a toothpick through a spiral of white dots for an easy web texture.
  7. Pipe white oval eyes and outline in black once set.
